Jazz in the UK is alive and kicking, with Brighton hosting talent from across the country through notable spots like The Verdict, Love Supreme and the recent JAZZ RE:FEST at Brighton Dome. Having seen once local acts like Vels Trio and Footshooter flock the roost and head to London, we thought it was about time we gave people a more defined platform to showcase their talent, in comes ‘Jazz Club’ at Patterns, a new series of events for our ground floor bar.
Each string of events will be curated by a label, artist or collective of creatives akin to the scene, and for the first one who better to ask than Mr Bongo. The Brighton based independent record label will be be curating three events in the bar between Oct and the end of the year. Each event will feature an up and coming live act with DJ support from the hosts. For the second editions, Mr Bongo invites Penya to Jazz Club.
Penya are 4 piece percussion driven electronic quartet led by producer and multi-instrumentalist Magnus PI.
Penya’s percussive wanderings in Cuba, Turkey, Morocco, Peru, Tanzania and India have garnered a tribal, alternative dance floor take on Afro-Latin rhythms.
Many of Penya’s songs touch on ancient Afro-Cuban melodies sung by the band’s multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Lilli Elina, whilst other tracks are wide open electronic groove scapes that draw on percussion don Jim Le Ms experiences as a ceremonial Bata drummer. Viva Msimang’s dubbed-out trombone improvisations, percussion and backing vocal contributions complete the Penya soundscape.
